After creating the new "Category" folder with mapping, I realised I had missed a parameter mapping and then when deleting the empty "Category" folder i got the crash again. I have checked all updates and SP's are installed and my Windows 10 is also up to date as far as I can tell.
Perhaps it's co-incidental, I really don't know. Only when I place a part that I have modelled myself, can be a simple block did the CC crash again. there is no tie up to any date from the History screen either. Yet, my Installed updates shows not a trace of this update.

Can apply filters at will with no problems and can insert sample parts that come with inventor and every thing seemed fine. Update KB2538242 I notice from my Update History screen that update KB2538242 has bee successfully updated some 28 times, surely once should be sufficient, unless there were some subtle variations bearing the same KB number. As mentioned in a previous post, the CC seems to work fine in an empty assembly window and I can place all sorts of parts from the CC to my hearts content.

Over the weekend I did a very thorough and clean uninstall of all Autodesk software on my pc as I had old versions of inventor installed on my system and thought that maybe this could be wreaking havoc.
